As special needs parents, we live busy lives. It’s important to remind ourselves every now and then about the things that really matter most.

Here’s a list of 11 things to remember as a special needs mom:

1 – Make time to enjoy your kids

We’re usually busy and often over-scheduled. Remember to make time to play, laugh, be silly, and just enjoy your kids. Make memories outside of hospital walls.

2 – Celebrate the little things!

Brag about those accomplishments that might seem small to others but are huge for our kids! Our kids develop on their own clock, they learn many skills late, and some they never master.

3 – You’re not alone

There are loads of other moms facing some of the same challenges you’re facing. Make sure you get in contact with some of them!

4 – Nobody’s perfect

That includes you. We all make mistakes – forgive yourself and move on if you made the wrong decision, forgot to do something or feel that you just didn’t do enough.

5 – You’re a hero

You do so many things you never thought you’d be able to do. Every day, you manage situations that a “regular parent” would think are impossible. You’re no regular parent.

6 – Therapy is play, and play is therapy

For children, therapy is play and play is therapy. The best therapists find ways to make my kids engage in activities that they otherwise would have hated, by making it a game. On the other hand, when your child is playing at home, they’re learning, having fun, and getting stronger.

7 – Don’t compare

All kids are different, and they will grow and develop at their own pace. Your child is unique and will have their own individual strengths and challenges.

8 – Unfortunately, difficult decisions do await

You will have to make difficult, sometimes painful decisions. Sometimes your available options don’t include an easy way out. Make it, move on, and once it’s made don’t rethink it. Easier said than done, but worth a try!

9 – Parenting is extra hard when there are extra needs

But it’s also extra rewarding. Sometimes you must search your heart for the rewards, but they are there if you look for them.

10 – Remember to take care of yourself

You can’t take care of your child if you don’t take care of yourself. I know it’s difficult but make time for self-care.

11 – Trust your instincts.

You know your child best, and more often than not, you can trust your instinct. While professionals are experts in their areas, you are the expert on your child.

Let me know if you have any suggestions that we can add to the list!
